‘Towards a Different Common Sense: from battlefield to household – reducing violence, transforming gender relations’
With Cynthia Cockburn. Cynthia is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology, City University, London and an Honorary Professor in the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender at the University of Warwick. Her research is action-oriented and designed to contribute to social movements, particularly the movement for peace and justice.
The talk is at 11am and will last about 30 minutes followed by questions. Coffee is available from 10.30am

Speaker: Professor Fawaz Gerges. Respondent: Professor Charles Tripp. Chair: Dr Kristian Coates Ulrichsen. What drives large-scale, popular mobilizations in the Middle East and North Africa? And what are the challenges and prospects for democratic transformation and consolidation in the region? This lecture, ahead of the release of the LSE Middle East Centre’s new book, The New Middle East: Protest and Revolution in the Arab World (CUP, 2013), looks to explore these questions and more. Fawaz Gerges is director of the Middle East Centre at LSE.
Petro-Aggression: When Oil Causes War.
Speaker: Professor Jeff Colgan, Chair: Guy Michaels. Why are some but not all oil-exporting "petrostates" aggressive in international affairs? The lecture explains under which conditions oil income enables political leaders to eliminate political constraints, reduce domestic accountability, and take their countries to war. Petro-aggression thus extends the idea of the resource curse into the realm of international relations. C
The Implications of the Israeli and American Elections on the Future of Palestinian-Israeli Relations and the Peace Process.
Speaker: Khalil Shikaki. Khalil Shikaki will discuss the likely direction of Palestinian-Israeli relations in the aftermath of the re-election of Obama and given the Israeli election in January 2013. Is there a future for the two-state solution after four years of stalemate? Khalil Shikaki is director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) based in Ramallah.
Can Democracy be Saved?
Participation, Deliberation and Social Movements. Speaker: Professor Donatella Della Porta. While liberal democracy is losing trust and legitimacy, social movements of different types are calling for alternatives. This lecture will discuss the potential of participatory and deliberative models of democracy. Donatella Della Porta is professor of sociology at the European University Institute. 6.30-8pm at New Theatre, East Building, London School of Economics.
Community Resistance to Extreme Energy
Community Resistance to Extreme Energy Workshop & Benefit Gig, organised by Frack Free Somerset in collaboration with Frack Off as part of the Frack Free February month of action. The workshop will look at what 'extreme energy' is and place these developments in context of the bigger picture before looking at models of resistance around the world, including examples from the Lock the Gate & Coal Seam Gas Free Communities in Australia. Community resistance in the UK will then be explored as well as next steps for Somerset & the South West.

Wednesday 7th August – Peace Crane Walk from AWE Burghfield to AWE Aldermaston and back. Thursday 8th August – Slow Walking Meditation around AWE Burghfield.. Friday 9th August – Nagasaki Lament at AWE Burghfield.

Jo Berry daughter of Sir Anthony Berry MP who was killed in the IRA Brighton Bombing during the 1984 Tory Party Conference and Belfast-born Pat Magee, former IRA activist, who was given multiple life sentences for the Brighton Bombing will dialogue and share their experiences and thoughts on the choice we often face empathy or enmity.
