An event organised by Medact.
Today many decision makers believe that ‘nuclear deterrence’ is an essential component of the UK’s defence strategy. At this event Medact will launch a report which examines the delusional nature of some of the thinking that underpins this belief.
The evening will be chaired by Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer, and speakers include Frank Boulton, a Trustee of Medact; Kate Hudson, General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; and Ben Zala, Director of the Sustainable Security Programme of the Oxford Research Group.
The Delusional Thinking behind a Policy of 'Nuclear Deterrence'
Stop Fooling with Nuclear Weapons
This year on April Fools’ Day, we will be going to Aldermaston to highlight our opposition to Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system – because that’s where the nuclear bombs are made.
We’ll be saying Scrap Trident and cancel plans to replace it.
We’ll be gathering around the base in our thousands with music, colour, and speeches. Bring things to decorate the fence and to make a noise ("rough music") at 2.

Syria's peace: what, how, when?

Violence is creating new on-the-ground political realities. What work should be done now to create and build upon opportunities for de-escalation, and widen options for Syrians?
Speakers include: Fawaz Gerges in conversation with Nir Rosen
Alexey Malashenko, Firdevs Robinson, Julien Barnes-Dacey, Heiko Wimmen, Kjetil Selvik. Chair: Mariano Aguirre

‘Is green growth possible and do we really need it?’
A debate with Pete Dickenson and Derek Wall
A debate as to whether an eco-socialist program would have to curtail growth or could it provide an environmental sustainable version of growth?
Our guest are agreed that capitalism is a root problem of a range of environmental problems the world is facing, but can a socialist alternative resolve these issues? Crucially, would an eco-socialist alternative have to curtail growth or could it administer an environmentally sustainable version of growth?
