Blackamoores: Africans in Tudor England, their presence, status and origins
With Onyeka. It is now reasonably well known that there were significant numbers of Black people in Tudor England. This illustrated talk indicates that, contrary to expectations, Africans were present throughout England, sometimes holding important occupations. While some were born as slaves, others were not and some were born in England, sometimes being employed by powerful people because of their skills. Onyeka has examined all the evidence of the Black presence in Tudor time to reveal more of their status and origins.
Against austerity, how we can fix the crisis they made
With Richard Seymour. Why are the rich still getting away with it? They get richer, we get poorer, yet protests against austerity are few and protesters appear marginal. Richard Seymour analyses how we got into this mess and why society is being re-engineered in the interests of profit. But this is not a gospel of despair. Seymour argues for new responses to the crisis, following Brecht’s idea that the good old things are over, it’s time to confront the bad new ones. Richard Seymour writes for The Guardian and runs the blog Lenin’s Tomb.
Undercover, with Rob Evans.
Rob Evans, from the Guardian, will talk about his book Undercover, which exposed the long history of police involvement in protest groups. In particular he described the history of the Special Demonstration Squad which sent in long-term infiltrators to left-wing political groups. This group stayed undercover for years, with most members having sexual relations with “subversives”, in some cases fathering children with their targets.
Off to Dublin in the Green.

St. Patrick’s Day & the Irish in England: History, Identity & Belonging.
St. Patrick’s Day as we know it today is largely a creation of the Irish diaspora. It’s an interesting means of studying the similarities and differences between Irishness abroad and Irish national identity in Ireland. Marc Scully of Leicester University will explore the history of St. Patrick’s Day parades in English cities, and the extent to which Irish people in England see contemporary parades as representing their own identities.
