CHATHAM The Magna Carta, signed on 15 June 1215, was a peace treaty between King John and the rebelling barons. It was not meant as a lasting declaration of rights and legal principles. But the concessions the king had to give and the rights he had to recognise reveal an underlying principle: those in a position of power cannot maintain absolute power over others for ever, nor at all costs. This is why the Magna Carta can be considered as a root document for our human and civil rights to this day.
