The London Pacifism and Nonviolence Discussion Group meet on the second Tuesday every month, from 7pm to about 9pm, at Housmans
Bookshop, 5 Caledonian Road, Kings Cross, London N1.
Is sport usually just an excuse to indulge our most primitive tribalist instincts? Does the hysteria around many sports events bring out the worst in people?
Can sport be a progressive force to bring people together across boundaries? Does the possibility of sport being progressive and having positive aspects depend on whether or not we’re thinking of competitive team-based sports? Are the Olympics an example of all that’s worst in sport? Is the fact that teams are “national” teams a major problem?
Are sports a way for the establishment to divert the mass of people from the necessity of struggling for social change?

If you have any views on this topic - whether related to the above ideas or not - you're welcome at the May meeting of the London Pacifism and Nonviolence Discussion Group.
Next month: Nonviolence and animal rights.
