The riots of August 2011 raise a number of issues for Quakers. We saw protesters cause a great deal of destruction and communities come together to clear up afterwards. Yet some of us may be more sympathetic to the motives than the methods (or vice versa) in each case.
In this dialogue we seek to address some difficult questions:
What we do understand by “community?”
What binds a community together? Is it the ideas which its members share, or what they do together?
Do we see ourselves as part of a local community, or as a community of Friends apart from it?
Our speakers will be Nigel Norrie a Community Worker in Tottenham & Catherine West the Labour Member for Tollington Ward and current Leader of Islington Council.
