Knowing how tawdry the biographical process can be, many writers & artists on their deathbeds, including biographers themselves, refuse their executors to allow a biography to be written. So how do biografiends, as James Joyce described the species, defend themselves? Speaking from her 30-year experience as a writer of biographies, teacher of biographies, & reviewer of biographies, Frances Wilson explores the moral quagmire. Frances is a critic & author of six biographies including, most recently, Burning Man: The Ascent of D H Lawrence. She is currently writing a life of Muriel Spark, who famously fell out with her first biographer.
