Women’s human rights activists today fight an ongoing and uphill battle to win a place for women in peacemaking processes and to embed guarantees of women’s fundamental rights in peace agreements. Such ideas—which often still seem radical—are in fact grounded in arguments that women have been putting forward for 100 years or more. Drawing from her new book, Peace on Our Terms: The Global Battle for Women’s Rights After the First World War, Dr. Mona Siegel will discuss global feminists’ interventions during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. From demanding a seat at the negotiating table, to confronting sexual violence again women in wartime, to insisting upon women’s freedom of movement and self-expression, pioneering female activists set an agenda a century ago that continues to inform global policymaking today. Speaker: Mona Siegel, Professor of History at California State University, Sacramento
