Documentary on the Renunciation of military means enshrined in the Japanese constitution. The topic will be 'Japan's Article 9' (the article in the Japanese Constitution, imposed after WWII, which states that Japan will remain demilitarised and never again take part in warfare). There will be no speaker but a DVD 'Rainbow World' (18mins) will be shown with a discussion to follow. The DVD was made by a Japanese group campaigning to retain Article 9 and suggesting that other countries take on a similar stance, renouncing war. The DVD visits different parts of the world and records people's views on the subject. It is mostly in English, with Japanese sub-titles. The UN’s report entitled “The Responsibility to Protect” says that sovereign states have a responsibility to protect their own citizens from avoidable catastrophe. If they fail to do so, that responsibility must be borne by the international community. This may necessitate the use of armed intervention. For Christian pacifists who oppose the use of violence, this is a serious dilemma. Joining us will be Doug Hostetter, the Mennonite Central Committee Liaison to the UN, who has been involved in discussions on R2P at the UN level, Hansuli Gerber, the coordinator of the WCC’s Decade to Overcome Violence, who has been involved in the WCC discussions, and Marie-Noëlle von der Recke, General Secretary of Church & Peace.
