LONDON. Insight with Misha Glenny:
McMafia. McMafia is a
fearless, encompassing, wholly authoritative investigation of the now proven
ability of organized crime worldwide to find and service markets driven by a
seemingly insatiable demand for illegal wares. Whether discussing the Russian
mafia, Colombian drug cartels, or Chinese labor
smugglers, Misha Glenny
makes clear how organized crime feeds off the poverty of the developing
world, how it exploits new technology in the forms of cybercrime
and identity theft, and how both global crime and terror are fueled by an identical source: the triumphant material
affluence of the West. more++

BATH. Responsibility to Protect; London Mennonite
Theology Forum. Ammerdown Retreat Centre near Bath. See www.ammerdown.org for more information. The UN’s report
entitled “The Responsibility to Protect” says that sovereign states have a
responsibility to protect their own citizens from avoidable catastrophe. If
they fail to do so, that responsibility must be borne by the international
community. This may necessitate the use of armed intervention. For Christian
pacifists who oppose the use of violence, this is a serious dilemma. Joining
us will be Doug Hostetter, the Mennonite Central
Committee Liaison to the UN, who has been involved in discussions on R2P at
the UN level, Hansuli Gerber, the coordinator of
the WCC’s Decade to Overcome Violence, who has been
involved in the WCC discussions, and Marie-Noëlle
von der Recke, General
Secretary of Church & Peace. We may be offering transportation from London (or London

a single. To book, call or email Janelle Thiessen
